One of the most frustrating things to see in your lawn is a bare spot. Patchy areas where the grass just doesn't seem to grow can happen for a couple of reasons, and fixing them isn't nearly as difficult as you may think.

Why Repair Bare Spots?

Bare spots can occur in your lawn for many reasons, from heavy foot traffic, pests, dog urine, poor soil conditions, and even improper lawn care are just a few of the things that can cause your luscious grass to form its bald spots. Fall is one of the best times of the year to address your lawn's bare spots, especially with a fescue-seeded lawn.

The process of repairing bare spots in your lawn is easy, plus, its one of the best things you can do for your lawn to ensure it endures the cold and has a strong, green spring! The moderate temperatures and sunlight of Georgia's fall are a great environment to encourage seed germination and begin root growth. The fall also comes with less sunlight than the summer months, meaning your soil should retain more moisture during this time as well.

When you repair bare spots in your lawn, you're essentially overseeding your lawn, just by targeting specific areas. In general, overseeding is great for your lawn! If you never overseed, your lawn's grass will grow old; it won't grow as strong as it used to and will not have the opportunity to propagate itself with consistent summertime mowing.

How to Repair Bare Spots

When repairing bare spots in your lawn, ensure that you have the required materials. You'll need a handheld aerator, your fescue seed, a rake, and a water source.

1. Thoroughly aerate the affected area(s). This can be done using a handheld area, especially if the bare spot is only 6-24 inches in diameter. This process helps loosed the soil, letting your roots grow deep and strong.

2. Next, you will want to add the seeds. Make sure you're matching the most current seed that your fescue lawn was seeded with, or if you overseed regularly you may already have some on hand. (Tip: aim to drop the seed into the holes created by the aerator, or use a rake or your hand to brush them into the holes, this will help speed up the germination.)

3. One you have applied the seed, follow it up with some fall fertilizer. Fall fertilizer is specifically designed to stimulate the growth of new roots, making it necessary for fixing bare spots in your lawn.

4. Water these spots in your lawn once or twice a day until you begin to see new growth. This process could take anywhere from one to three weeks.
